About Uganda

Authentic Encounters, Natural Heritage & Bespoke Travel Design

Located in Nakasongola District roughly 176 kilometres north of Kampala along the highway to Murchison Falls, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary covers 70 square kilometres of protected acacia woodland, savanna grasslands, and lugogo wetlands. Established in 2005 through a visionary partnership between the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Rhino Fund Uganda, Ziwa is the proud, exclusive sanctuary dedicated to breeding and restoring wild rhinoceroses to Uganda.

Historically, both black and northern white rhinos roamed Uganda's savannas in large numbers, but poaching and civil unrest during the 1970s and 1980s led to their complete extinction in the wild by 1983. In 2005, the sanctuary reintroduced six southern white rhinos (*Ceratotherium simum simum*). Through dedicated 24-hour armed ranger protection and successful breeding, the sanctuary's white rhino population has now grown to over 40 healthy individuals. Ziwa is celebrated worldwide as the ONLY location in Uganda where travelers can track wild rhinoceroses on foot in their natural bush habitat.

Frequently Asked Questions About Uganda

Travel Tips, Permits, Seasons & Logistics

Is rhino tracking on foot at Ziwa safe?
Yes, it is very safe. Southern white rhinos are generally calm grazers, but safety protocols are strictly enforced. All tracking expeditions are led by highly trained, armed Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers who monitor rhino body language and maintain a respectful, safe distance of at least 7 to 10 metres at all times.
Why are rhinos only found at Ziwa and not in Uganda's national parks?
Rhinos were completely poached to extinction in Uganda during civil turmoil by 1983. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established as a secure, electrified, 70-square-kilometre breeding sanctuary guarded round-the-clock by armed rangers to rebuild the national population. Once numbers reach target breeding thresholds, UWA plans to reintroduce breeding groups into historical habitats in Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley National Parks.
How does Ziwa fit into a typical Uganda safari itinerary?
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is conveniently located directly on the main paved highway from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park (approx. 2.5 to 3 hours drive north of Kampala). Almost all safari travelers stop at Ziwa for 2 hours of rhino tracking and lunch before proceeding to Murchison Falls, making it the perfect gateway stop to experience all of the Big Five.
