Tour Overview

Kampala, Uganda's bustling capital, is a city of seven hills, vibrant chaos, and warm hospitality. Often overlooked by travelers rushing to safari parks, this sprawling metropolis offers a fascinating blend of ancient Buganda royalty, colonial history, modern African commerce, and religious diversity—all packed into a compact, walkable (if hilly) cityscape.

This 2-day budget tour is designed for the curious traveler who wants to move beyond the hotel pool and dive into the real Kampala. Over two days, you will stand inside a UNESCO-listed royal tomb, bargain for handmade crafts, scale a mosque minaret for sweeping city views, find serenity at Africa’s only Bahá'í Temple, and snap photos at Uganda's symbol of freedom—the Independence Monument.

Tour Highlights

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1: Day 1: Day 1: Culture, Kings & Crafts

Focus: History, local shopping, and traditional Buganda heritage.

Morning (8:00 AM – 10:30 AM):
Pick-up from your hotel. Head to Kasubi Royal Tombs (UNESCO site). This is the burial ground for the Buganda kings. Take a guided tour inside the massive thatched Muzibu-Azaala-Mpanga hut to learn about Ganda traditions, drumming, and royal history.

Late Morning (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM):
Drive to Nakasero Market. This is the city’s oldest fresh-food market. Climb the stairs through the chaotic, colorful stalls—taste fresh pineapples, see piles of matooke (green bananas), and shop for spices and local herbs.

Midday (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM):
Lunch break (budget-friendly): Try a local "rolex" (chapati rolled with eggs and veggies) from a street vendor near the market, or eat at a modest café in the city center.

Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:00 PM):
Walk to the nearby Craft Market (at the Uganda Museum grounds or the permanent tented village on Buganda Road). Here you can bargain for handmade drums, bark cloth, wooden sculptures, and colorful Kitenge fabrics. Great for souvenirs.

Evening (5:30 PM):
Return to the hotel. Optional evening: Explore the nightlife in Kabalaga or enjoy a quiet dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2

Day 2: Day 2: Day 2: Mosques, Temples & Monuments

Focus: Religious diversity, panoramic views, and independence history.

Morning (8:00 AM – 10:30 AM):
Visit the Gaddafi National Mosque (at Old Kampala Hill). Climb the 304 steps to the top of the minaret for the best panoramic view of Kampala’s seven hills. Tour the main prayer hall and learn about Islamic influence in Uganda. (Note: Modest dress required; robes are provided at the entrance).

Late Morning (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM):
Drive out to Kikaya Hill to visit the Bahá'í Temple – the only Bahá'í House of Worship in Africa. Sit in the peaceful, domed gardens overlooking the city. It’s a serene spot for meditation and photos. The grounds are free, but donations are appreciated.

Midday (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM):
Lunch stop (budget-friendly) near the temple or back in the city center.

Afternoon (2:30 PM – 4:00 PM):
Head to the Independence Monument at the roundabout on Speke Road. This iconic statue symbolizes the birth of Uganda in 1962. Take your photos and learn the story of the man breaking free from colonial chains.

Late Afternoon (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Bonus stop (if time permits): Visit the nearby Uganda National Theatre for an impromptu art exhibition or performance, or do some last-minute souvenir shopping.

Evening (6:00 PM):
Drop-off back at your hotel or the airport to end the tour.
