Located in the western part of the country, this lush tropical rainforest covers over 700 square kilometres and is home to the highest density of primates in Africa. With 13 different species, including the endangered chimpanzee, red colobus, L'Hoest's monkey, and the black-and-white colobus, Kibale offers an unparalleled primate experience.

This 4-day tour is designed for wildlife lovers who want to get up close with our closest relatives in their natural habitat. The highlight is a guided chimpanzee tracking expedition through the forest, where you will spend a full hour observing these intelligent apes as they feed, play, and socialize in the canopy. Beyond chimps, the forest teems with colourful butterflies, exotic birds, and towering hardwood trees draped in vines.

Beyond the forest, this tour also includes a visit to the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run project renowned for its exceptional birdwatching and swamp-dwelling primates. Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1: Day 1: Day 1: Kampala / Entebbe – Drive to Kibale Forest National Park

Morning (7:00 AM):
Depart from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Drive west through the districts of Mpigi, Mubende, and Fort Portal, passing through lush countryside, tea plantations, and the scenic Rwenzori mountain foothills.

Midday (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM):
Stop for lunch en route at a restaurant or picnic spot, likely in or near Fort Portal.

Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM):
Continue to the park. As you approach Kibale, you will enter the "Crater Lake Region," dotted with dozens of volcanic lakes surrounded by steep green hills. Enjoy the breathtaking views.

Evening (6:00 PM):
Arrive at your lodge or campsite near the park headquarters in Kanyanchu. Check in, freshen up, and enjoy dinner.

Day 2

Day 2: Day 2: Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest

Early Morning (7:30 AM – 8:00 AM):
Arrive at the Kanyanchu visitor centre for a briefing on the rules and regulations of chimpanzee tracking. You will be assigned to a group of up to 8 people with a ranger guide.

Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM):
Enter the forest and begin your chimpanzee tracking expedition. The hike can take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours, depending on where the chimps nested overnight. Once located, you will spend a full hour observing them—watch them swing through the vines, feed on figs, groom each other, and communicate with loud pant-hoots. The forest is also alive with other primates: red colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and black-and-white colobus are frequently seen.

Midday (12:30 PM – 2:00 PM):
Return to the lodge for a well-earned lunch and some rest.

Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM):
Optional activity: Take a guided village walk in the nearby community, where you can learn about traditional medicine, visit a local school, or see how the Batooro people brew local banana beer. Alternatively, relax at the lodge and enjoy the forest sounds.

Evening (6:30 PM):
Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 3

Day 3: Day 3: Day 3: Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary & Crater Lakes Exploration

Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM):
After breakfast, drive to the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run conservation project just outside the park. Take a 3-hour guided walk through the swamp, boardwalks, and forest trails. Bigodi is renowned for its incredible birdlife, including the great blue turaco, black bee-eater, white-collared oliveback, and the rare green-breasted pitta. You'll also encounter primates like the red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, and sometimes the elusive sitatunga antelope.

Midday (12:30 PM – 2:00 PM):
Return to the lodge for lunch.

Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM):
Take a scenic drive to the crater lakes area. Visit lakes like Lake Nyabikere, Lake Nkuruba, or Lake Kifuruka—each with its own colour and character. You can swim, hike around the rim, or simply enjoy the panoramic views of the lush landscape. This area is also great for spotting butterflies and forest birds.

Evening (6:30 PM):
Return to the lodge for dinner. Optional night walk in the forest to spot bushbabies, pottos, and nocturnal tree hyraxes (must be arranged in advance).

Day 4

Day 4: Day 4: Day 4: Morning Nature Walk – Return to Kampala / Entebbe

Morning (8:00 AM – 10:00 AM):
Enjoy a final nature walk along the forest edge near the lodge. This is a relaxed stroll to spot birds, butterflies, and the occasional primate before you depart. Alternatively, you can choose to sleep in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast.

Midday (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM):
Check out of the lodge. Begin the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe.

Late Morning – Afternoon (11:00 AM – 6:00 PM):
Drive back through Fort Portal and the rural countryside. Stop for lunch en route.
