Uganda is a birdwatcher's paradise, boasting over 1,080 recorded bird species—more than half of Africa's total and nearly 10% of the world's bird species. This extraordinary diversity is thanks to the country's varied habitats, ranging from dense tropical rainforests and vast savannah plains to expansive wetlands, alpine moorlands, and the shores of Lake Victoria. For birders, Uganda offers an unmatched combination of endemics, rarities, and spectacularly colourful species.
This 8-day birding tour is carefully designed to cover Uganda's most important birding hotspots, targeting both the sought-after Albertine Rift endemics and the iconic species of the savannah and wetlands. You will search for the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork in the Mabamba Swamp, track forest specialties in Kibale and Bwindi, cruise the Kazinga Channel for waterbirds, and explore the acacia woodlands of Queen Elizabeth National Park. With an experienced birding guide, you'll be ticking off lifers—from the green-breasted pitta and African green broadbill to the Rwenzori turaco and great blue turaco.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Day 1: Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Mabamba Swamp Shoebill Search
Morning (Upon Arrival):
Meet your driver-birding guide at Entebbe International Airport. After a brief orientation, drive to the nearby Mabamba Swamp.
Late Morning (9:30 AM – 12:30 PM):
Board a wooden motorised canoe for a shoebill stork search in the vast papyrus swamp. Mabamba is one of the most reliable spots in Uganda to see this prehistoric-looking bird. While searching for the shoebill, you will also encounter other waterbirds: African jacana, pygmy goose, African water rail, and various herons and egrets. Keep an eye out for the malachite kingfisher and the magnificent African fish eagle.
Midday (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM):
Return to Entebbe for lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon (3:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Visit the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, a tranquil spot for forest birding. Target species include Ross's turaco, grey parrot, African mourning dove, and the colourful woodland kingfisher. The gardens are also home to several primate species like vervet monkeys and black-and-white colobus.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Check into your hotel in Entebbe. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Day 2: Day 2: Transfer to Murchison Falls – Birding en Route & Nile Boat Cruise
Morning (7:00 AM – 12:00 PM):
Depart Entebbe and drive north towards Murchison Falls National Park. Birding en route includes stops at wetland and woodland areas for species like the long-crested eagle, brown snake eagle, and various weavers and widowbirds.
Midday (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM):
Stop for lunch en route at a restaurant or picnic spot near Masindi.
Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM):
Arrive at Murchison Falls. Board a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile to the base of the falls. This is one of Africa's best waterbird experiences—look out for Goliath herons, saddle-billed storks, African skimmers, pied kingfishers, and giant kingfishers. The riverbanks are also packed with hippos and crocodiles, with elephants and buffaloes drinking in the shallows.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Check into your lodge near the park. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Day 3: Day 3: Full Day Birding in Murchison Falls – Savannah & Riverine Specials
Early Morning (6:30 AM – 11:00 AM):
Set out for a morning game drive on the Buligi Peninsula. While this drive is excellent for mammals, it is equally productive for birds. Target savannah species include the Abyssinian ground hornbill, secretary bird, black-bellied bustard, white-bellied go-away-bird, and the striking red-throated bee-eater. Also look for the endemic Heuglin's courser and the rare Denham's bustard.
Midday (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM):
Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest during the hottest part of the day.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Bird along the riverine forests and woodland edges near the park. Look for species like the red-winged grey warbler, yellow-billed barbet, and the spectacular green woodhoopoe. You may also spot the pied kingfisher hunting over the river.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Day 4: Day 4: Murchison Falls – Return to Kampala – Transfer to Kibale
Morning (7:00 AM – 10:00 AM):
Enjoy a final birding walk along the Nile before breakfast. Target species missed earlier, such as the western banded snake eagle and the rock pratincole.
Midday (10:00 AM – 1:00 PM):
Check out and begin the drive south towards Kampala. Stop for lunch en route.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 6:00 PM):
Continue to Kibale Forest National Park. Upon arrival, check into your lodge near the forest edge.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Dinner and overnight at the lodge. Your guide will brief you on the next day's forest birding activities.
Day 5: Day 5: Day 5: Full Day Birding in Kibale Forest – Forest Specials & Bigodi Wetland
Early Morning (7:00 AM – 11:00 AM):
Enter Kibale Forest for a morning birding walk along the forest trails. Kibale boasts over 375 bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics. Target species include the green-breasted pitta, African green broadbill, black-billed turaco, and the great blue turaco. Listen for the distinctive calls of the black-capped apalis and the grey-throated flycatcher.
Midday (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM):
Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided boardwalk birding session. Bigodi is exceptional for swamp-dwelling species. Look for the white-collared oliveback, black bee-eater, blue-breasted kingfisher, and the rare yellow-billed barbet. You may also spot the great blue turaco and the African pitta if you're lucky.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Day 6: Day 6: Transfer to Bwindi – Birding en Route & Forest Arrival
Morning (7:30 AM – 12:00 PM):
Depart Kibale and drive south towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Birding en route includes stops in the crater lake region and along the forest edge. Target species include the Rwenzori turaco, regal sunbird, and the cinnamon-chested bee-eater.
Midday (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM):
Stop for lunch en route at a scenic spot near the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Continue to Bwindi. Arrive at your lodge, which is nestled on the forest edge. The lodge grounds themselves offer excellent birding—look for the black-throated apalis, green-headed sunbird, and the red-faced woodland warbler.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 7: Day 7: Day 7: Full Day Birding in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – Albertine Rift Endemics
Early Morning (6:30 AM – 11:00 AM):
Start the day with a forest birding walk along one of Bwindi's famous trails. Bwindi is the premier destination for Albertine Rift endemics. Target species include the Rwenzori black bulbul, handsome francolin, Rwenzori batis, yellow-eyed black flycatcher, and the strange weaver. Listen for the elusive African green broadbill and the purple-breasted sunbird. The forest is also home to the endangered mountain gorilla (tracking is optional but requires a separate permit).
Midday (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM):
Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Take a different trail or drive to a higher elevation for more species. Look for the Rwenzori turaco, the stunning blue-headed sunbird, and the mountain masked apalis. The afternoon is also a great time to spot the crowned hornbill and the waller's starling.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Return to the lodge for dinner and a final night in Bwindi.
Day 8: Day 8: Day 8: Morning Birding – Transfer to Kampala / Entebbe – Departure
Morning (7:00 AM – 9:30 AM):
Enjoy a final birding walk along the forest edge near the lodge. This is your last chance to spot any missed species, such as the white-tailed blue flycatcher or the collared apalis.
Midday (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM):
Check out of the lodge. Begin the long drive back to Kampala or Entebbe.
Late Morning – Afternoon (11:00 AM – 5:00 PM):
Drive through the beautiful southwestern countryside, stopping for lunch en route. Birding en route includes short stops at wetlands and open fields for species like the crowned crane, African spoonbill, and yellow-throated longclaw.
Evening (6:00 PM – 7:00 PM):
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport or your hotel in Kampala/Entebbe for drop-off. End of tour.
