Tour Overview

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth. Deep within the misty, bamboo-covered slopes of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you will come face-to-face with the endangered mountain gorilla—a gentle giant that shares over 98% of our DNA. This 5-day tour is designed for travelers who want to focus exclusively on this once-in-a-lifetime encounter, while also enjoying the stunning scenery of southwestern Uganda.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to approximately half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population. The park's name, "Impenetrable," reflects its dense vegetation, which creates a dramatic and immersive trekking environment. Over five days, you will track a habituated gorilla family, spending a full hour observing their behaviour—watching the silverback assert his dominance, mothers cradle their infants, and juveniles play in the undergrowth.

Beyond the gorillas, this tour offers a cultural immersion with the Batwa pygmies, the original inhabitants of the forest, and a scenic journey through the "Switzerland of Uganda" with its rolling hills, terraced farms, and crater lakes. For those seeking a deeply personal and unforgettable wildlife encounter, this 5-day gorilla trekking safari delivers.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1: Day 1: Day 1: Kampala / Entebbe – Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Morning (7:00 AM):
Depart from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Drive south through the lush countryside, passing through the districts of Mpigi, Masaka, and Mbarara. Enjoy views of rolling hills, tea plantations, and traditional homesteads.

Midday (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM):
Stop for lunch en route at a restaurant or picnic spot in Mbarara town.

Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Continue the journey, descending into the terraced hills of Kigezi—often called the "Switzerland of Uganda." The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic with steep green hills, crater lakes, and winding roads. You may spot the Virunga Mountains on the horizon.

Evening (6:00 PM):
Arrive at your lodge or campsite near the park headquarters in Buhoma or Ruhija (depending on your gorilla trekking allocation). Check in, freshen up, and enjoy dinner. Your guide will brief you on the next day's gorilla trekking activities.

Day 2

Day 2: Day 2: Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Early Morning (6:30 AM – 7:30 AM):
Arrive at the park headquarters for registration, briefing, and allocation of your gorilla family group. You will be divided into groups of 8 trekkers, each assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family. The briefing covers safety rules, trekking etiquette, and what to expect.

Morning (8:00 AM – 1:00 PM):
Begin your mountain gorilla trek into the dense, "impenetrable" forest. The hike can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the family. The terrain is steep and muddy, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. Your ranger guides will clear the path with machetes and communicate with trackers who have been monitoring the gorillas since dawn.

Midday (When located):
Once you locate the gorilla family, you will have one magical hour to observe them. Watch the silverback—the dominant male—as he eats, grunts, and asserts his authority. See mothers gently caring for their infants and juveniles playfully rolling through the vegetation. This is an emotional and humbling experience that stays with you forever.

Afternoon (1:30 PM – 3:00 PM):
Return from the trek. Your guide will be waiting with a packed lunch. Enjoy your meal while sharing stories of your encounter.

Evening (6:30 PM):
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. Rest and recover from the day's adventure.

Day 3

Day 3: Day 3: Day 3: Rest Day – Optional Activities & Cultural Immersion

Morning (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM):
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a rest day to recover from the gorilla trek. Alternatively, choose from several optional activities:

Batwa Pygmy Experience: Visit the local Batwa community, the original inhabitants of Bwindi Forest. You will learn about their traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle, see their forest skills, enjoy traditional dances, and hear stories passed down through generations.

Gorilla Habituation Experience: For a more intensive primate encounter, join researchers for a full-day gorilla habituation experience. This allows up to 4 hours with a gorilla family that is still being accustomed to human presence—offering a deeper insight into gorilla behaviour and conservation.

Midday (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM):
Return to the lodge for lunch.

Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Continue with optional activities or take a nature walk along the forest edge. This is an excellent opportunity for birdwatching, targeting Albertine Rift endemics like the Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, and the black-throated apalis.

Evening (6:30 PM):
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 4

Day 4: Day 4: Day 4: Second Gorilla Trek (or Transfer to Ishasha for Tree-Climbing Lions)

Option A: Second Gorilla Trekking Session

Morning (6:30 AM – 1:00 PM):
If you booked a second gorilla trekking permit, return to the park headquarters for another briefing and allocation to a different gorilla family. This offers a completely different experience—each family has its own dynamics, and the forest sector (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo) offers varied terrain. Enjoy another magical hour with these gentle giants.

Option B: Transfer to Ishasha Sector (Queen Elizabeth National Park)

Morning (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM):
Depart Bwindi and drive north to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lions. The drive offers stunning views of the Virunga Mountains.

Midday (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM):
Arrive at your lodge in Ishasha. Check in and enjoy lunch.

Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Take an afternoon game drive through the Ishasha plains, searching for lions lounging in the branches of fig trees. You may also spot elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, and topis. Birdwatching is excellent here, with species like the Abyssinian ground hornbill and the black-bellied bustard.

Evening (6:30 PM):
Dinner and overnight at the lodge in Ishasha.

Day 5

Day 5: Day 5: Day 5: Morning Activity – Return to Kampala / Entebbe

If Option A (Bwindi):

Morning (7:30 AM – 10:00 AM):
Enjoy a final nature walk along the forest edge or visit a local village for a cultural experience. Take in the serene atmosphere of Bwindi one last time.

Midday (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM):
Check out of the lodge. Begin the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe.

Late Morning – Afternoon (11:00 AM – 6:00 PM):
Drive back through the scenic countryside. Stop for lunch en route.

Evening (6:00 PM – 7:00 PM):
Arrive at your drop-off point—your hotel, the airport, or any agreed location in Kampala/Entebbe. End of tour.
