About Uganda

Authentic Encounters, Natural Heritage & Bespoke Travel Design

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (321 km²) protects one of the oldest, most ecologically complex montane rainforests on Earth, dating back over 25,000 years through the last Ice Age. Spanning rugged ridges between 1,160 and 2,607 metres above sea level in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi's steep slopes are blanketed in a dense canopy of giant hardwood trees, creeping vines, bamboo groves, and ancient mosses that give the forest its 'impenetrable' name.

Bwindi is of immense global conservation significance, harboring roughly 459 endangered mountain gorillas (*Gorilla beringei beringei*)—almost half of the entire wild global population. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is organized across four distinct administrative sectors: Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south. Accompanied by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers, trackers navigate thick vegetation to locate habituated gorilla families, granting visitors a transformative hour observing gentle silverbacks, nursing mothers, and energetic juveniles in their pristine natural habitat.

Frequently Asked Questions About Uganda

Travel Tips, Permits, Seasons & Logistics

How do mountain gorilla trekking permits work in Uganda?
As regulated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), mountain gorilla trekking permits are strictly limited per gorilla family per day to protect primate health. Both standard 1-hour tracking and 4-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience permits must be secured months in advance through licensed tour operators like Siiru Tours.
What are the rules and physical requirements for gorilla trekking?
Trekkers must be at least 15 years old. The hike can take anywhere from 2 to 7 hours across steep, muddy terrain at elevations between 1,500m and 2,600m. Once the gorilla family is located, guests spend exactly 60 minutes observing them from a mandatory minimum distance of 7 to 10 metres. Face masks are mandatory in the presence of gorillas to prevent the transmission of human respiratory infections. Anyone exhibiting symptoms of cough, cold, flu, or other contagious illnesses is prohibited from trekking.
Are mountain gorilla encounters guaranteed?
While wild animals move freely and encounters cannot legally be 'guaranteed', UWA ranger-trackers head into the forest at dawn to locate the family from its overnight sleeping nests. As a result, the practical sighting success rate on guided treks in Bwindi exceeds 98%.
