Tour Overview
Volcanoes National Park, nestled in the Virunga Mountains of northwestern Rwanda, is one of the world's premier destinations for mountain gorilla trekking. Home to over half of the remaining mountain gorilla population, this misty bamboo forest offers an unparalleled opportunity to come face-to-face with these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
This 5-day tour is designed for travellers who want to focus exclusively on this once-in-a-lifetime encounter while also experiencing Rwanda's stunning landscapes and rich culture. The trek into the dense forest is physically demanding but deeply rewarding—after hiking through bamboo and thick vegetation, you will spend one magical hour observing a habituated gorilla family, watching the silverback assert his dominance, mothers cradle their infants, and juveniles play in the undergrowth.
Beyond the gorillas, this tour offers golden monkey tracking, visits to the Dian Fossey research site, cultural experiences with local communities, and a scenic drive through Rwanda's famous "Land of a Thousand Hills." With comfortable lodge accommodation and expert guiding, this safari delivers an intimate and unforgettable encounter with Africa's most magnificent primates.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Day 1: Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Morning (Upon Arrival):
Meet your driver-guide at Kigali International Airport. After a brief introduction and orientation, depart for the northern province.
Midday – Afternoon (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM):
Drive through the rolling hills of Rwanda, passing through Musanze town, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. Stop for lunch en route at a local restaurant.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM):
Arrive at your lodge or campsite near the park headquarters. Settle in and enjoy stunning views of the Virunga Mountain range. If time permits, take a short nature walk around the lodge to spot local birds like the streaky seedeater, African stonechat, and mountain buzzard.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge. Your guide will brief you on the next day's gorilla trekking activities.
Day 2: Day 2: Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Early Morning (6:30 AM – 7:30 AM):
Arrive at the park headquarters for registration, briefing, and allocation of your gorilla family group. You will be divided into groups of 8 trekkers, each assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family. The briefing covers safety rules, trekking etiquette, and what to expect.
Morning (8:00 AM – 1:00 PM):
Begin your mountain gorilla trek into the bamboo and montane forest. The hike can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the family. The terrain is steep and muddy, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. Your ranger guides will clear the path with machetes and communicate with trackers who have been monitoring the gorillas since dawn.
Midday (When located):
Once you locate the gorilla family, you will have one magical hour to observe them. Watch the silverback—the dominant male—as he eats, grunts, and asserts his authority. See mothers gently caring for their infants and juveniles playfully rolling through the vegetation. This is an emotional and humbling experience that stays with you forever.
Afternoon (1:30 PM – 3:00 PM):
Return from the trek. Your guide will be waiting with a packed lunch. Enjoy your meal while sharing stories of your encounter.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. Rest and recover from the day's adventure
Day 3: Day 3: Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking & Dian Fossey Research Site Visit
Morning (7:00 AM – 12:00 PM):
Return to Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey tracking. These endangered, playful primates are endemic to the Virunga massif and are famous for their striking orange-gold coats. The hike through the bamboo forests is easier than gorilla trekking, and you'll spend a full hour observing them leaping between bamboo stalks. This is also an excellent opportunity for birdwatching—look out for the Rwenzori turaco, dusky crimsonwing, and the elusive handsome francolin.
Midday (12:30 PM – 2:00 PM):
Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.
Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM):
Visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Research Site at Karisoke. Take a guided hike to the former camp of the legendary primatologist, where she conducted her groundbreaking research on mountain gorillas. The site offers poignant history and sweeping views over the Virunga volcanoes. Birding along the trail can also yield species like the Rwenzori double-collared sunbird and the strange weaver.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: Day 4: Day 4: Rest Day – Optional Activities & Cultural Immersion
Morning (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM):
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a rest day to recover from the gorilla trek. Alternatively, choose from several optional activities:
Gorilla Habituation Experience: For a more intensive primate encounter, join researchers for a full-day gorilla habituation experience. This allows up to 4 hours with a gorilla family that is still being accustomed to human presence—offering a deeper insight into gorilla behaviour and conservation.
Mount Bisoke Hike: For the adventurous, hike to the summit of Mount Bisoke (3,711 metres), which features a stunning crater lake at the top. The hike takes 4 to 6 hours and requires a reasonable fitness level.
Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village: Visit the local community project where former poachers now share their traditions through dance, storytelling, and demonstrations of traditional medicine and fire-making.
Midday (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM):
Return to the lodge for lunch.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:30 PM):
Continue with optional activities or take a nature walk along the forest edge. This is an excellent opportunity for birdwatching, targeting Albertine Rift endemics like the Rwenzori turaco and black-throated apalis.
Evening (6:30 PM):
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 5: Day 5: Day 5: Morning Nature Walk – Return to Kigali – Departure
Morning (7:30 AM – 10:00 AM):
Enjoy a final nature walk along the forest edge near the lodge. Spot any birds or primates you may have missed, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of the Virunga foothills.
Midday (10:30 AM – 12:00 PM):
Check out of the lodge. Begin the drive back to Kigali. Stop for lunch en route at a scenic spot.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM):
